Mobile Bristol: Authoring Digital Spaces

23 April 2007, Monday, 7.30 pm

Dr Kirsten Cater
Department of Computer Science
University of Bristol
UK

The purpose of Mobile Bristol (www.mobilebristol.com) is to provide an experimental test-bed for technology and user value research in pervasive mobile media. The vision of the test-bed is to provide a digital canvas over the city onto which rich situated digital experiences could be painted and new commercial ventures could be explored. As you walk through the city a diverse range of digital media experiences such as mediascapes, games, interactive media and art bring the city alive and augment the ambiance of the physical places.
Mobile Bristol supported a wide range of projects in partnership with organisations from the arts, education, commerce, local government and community groups. The projects involved artists, computer scientists, psychologists, designers and engineers, as Mobile Bristol is a keen advocate for a multi-disciplinary approach to design and research.
This presentation will describe several of the projects that have been carried out showing the range of discipline covered by Mobile Bristol; it will demonstrate the mediascape authoring tool that was implemented as a result of the research carried out and also propose a framework that can be used to enhance the user’s perception of a mobile media experience.

more about the lecturer

photoDr. Kirsten Cater is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bristol. She has worked, managed and published in a broad range of research areas including human computer interaction, computer graphics, selective rendering and pervasive computing. Her research is concerned with designing elegant solutions for delivering the maximum user experience from devices with limited processing capability by using knowledge of human-computer interaction. She is a firm believer in the value of user participation to guide the future of technology and technological experiences and uses her technical expertise to foresee and design possible future applications in these fields. She has given invited talks and workshop all around the world from the beaches of the Dominican Republic to the snow capped mountains of Banff, Canada. She has always highlighted the need for international collaboration and since 2006 she has been ACM SIGGRAPH’s International Relations Coordinator.
