Alexander Somov is rapidly gaining recognition in the UK as an exceptionally versatile, intelligent and imaginative musician. The Principal Cello with the Northern Sinfonia, Alexander made his début as concerto soloist with the Orchestra in February 2001 and is in growing demand as a chamber musician and recitalist.

Alexander began his cello studies in Sofia aged four, and on graduating from the Sofia Music School was offered a scholarship by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama to work with Professor Stefan Popov. In London, he soon won the Gold Medal, the highest accolade at the Guildhall School, following musicians such as Jacqueline du Pré, Tasmin Little and Bryn Terfel.

In a Gala performance in June 2004, Alexander will be playing the Schumann Cello Concerto with The Northern Sinfonia under Thomas Zehetmair, to mark the orchestra’s move to The Sage, Gateshead, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. During the year Alexander has concerto performances with the Northern Sinfonia and the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, and solo recitals in the UK and Festivals abroad. Recordings of the Prokofiev Symphony Concerto and the Haydn Cello Concertos are planned with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Alexander has been invited to play as Guest Principal Cello with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra,

Bogdana Popova is Professor of Piano at the National Music Academy in Sofia. Her intuitive musical and communicative skills have been highly valued by some of the most distinguished composers and performers and she is frequently invited to première and record new works, most of which have been recorded by the National Radio and TV in Bulgaria, Radio Munich, RAI and the Balkanton Record Company.
